Introducing incredible youth artist Ciera- realist.

27 Feb

Here are some samplings of extraordinary pencil drawings by young artist, Ciera Edwards.  I can only imagine what lies ahead of her.  The possibilities are endless!  She is so beautiful inside and out and her talent is FIERCE!  Next project is to build her portfolio with high quality reproductions of her work.  See more of her work at http://animalaffinity.deviantart.com/!

And of course, she makes adorable sock creations!  For example:

When graphic novels and @VanArtGallery inspire #graffiti. #Seth #youthart

29 Jan

In June 2008, I took several students to the Vancouver Art Gallery for the fantastic exhibit Krazy!

Our favorite section was the Comics/Graphic Novels.  Lynda Barry!  Art Speigelman!  Chris Ware!  Justin Green!  Oh kripes, I want to see the show again!  My student and I later did some graffiti (Dimitri taught me) in a skatebowl inspired by the character Wimbledon Green by Seth.  - Kat

Shiraya discovers that watersoluble graphite is her medium! #youthart

27 Jan

Let’s just say that when Shiraya used the fabulous 6B watersoluble graphite stick for the first time her art matured 20 years!  We were all WOWED!

Maryellen: powerful young artist. #activism

27 Jan

Maryellen produced this profoundly moving piece for an environmental art contest.  It reminds me of the activist work of Sue Coe.

And the subtle background reminds me of Georgia O’Keeffe‘s clouds:

SKY ABOVE THE CLOUDS

Lovely lively Liz’s lovely purse… #arttherapy #youthartisans

26 Jan

So proud of Liz and her accomplishments!  She is truly imaginative and gives so much back- with her honesty, enthusiasm and support.  She has been through much, and taken each experience as a chance to learn and grow.  Today she bestowed to me this beautiful handsewn bag and I ADORE IT.  Can’t wait to give her my exchange gift. – Kat

Liz made the following characters to cheer up an important person in her life (photos by Liz):

Operation Sock Monkey Western Division’s orphaned-project-project! Today’s monkey completed by Lenore!

25 Jan

We have a huge bag of unfinished abandoned projects.  Some of the staff and students are grabbing an “orphan” and finishing them for the next shipment of Operation Sock Monkey Western Division monkeys to Haiti!

Thanks to Lenore for finishing today’s monkey, complete with her purse with toys!

News from headquarters! Operation Sock Monkey=Microindustry and Empowerment in Woza Moya!

25 Jan

Update from OSM founder!

Heartworks in Cape Town, Groundcover in the Natal Midlands and the Buddhist Retreat Centre shop cannot get enough of our Sock Monkeys.  With Christmas just around the corner our craft sales have suddenly shot up, with the Sock Monkeys topping the list.

Apparently all 3 of the above outlets have waiting lists of customers wanting sock monkeys! The framed embroidery squares are also sold out and we do not have the capacity or time to make any more until next year in January.
