Colbert Monkey’s epic journey!

18 Feb

Monkey and baby eagle trekked to Stephen Colbert’s taping of the Colbert Report on Feb 17, 2010 to promote Operation Sock Monkey!

Almost ready to go! Eagle happily seated on top of Colbert Monkey. It was finished off with an Operation Sock Monkey button and website link!

Monkey and eagle meet several fellow stuffies as they wait for HOURS in lineup in anticipation of seeing Mr. Colbert!

Spencer- friend of monkey and eagle- had been in the lineup since 5:30 AM and helped the pair get a place closer to the front! Thanks Spence!

Monkey and eagle deep in thought as they wonder what lies ahead...

There they go! The crowd passes the pair forward to the camera man who will give them to Colbert!

The crowd cheers for Colbert! It was great fun with a massive amount of people. Somewhere up there is monkey and eagle off to new horizons- promoting Operation Sock Monkey and World Peace- one monkey at a time... Fly you two- FLY!

Tuesday means more monkeys and other stuff :)

This monkey was rescued from the project bin- G. started it a year and a half ago! She got as far as the eyes, mouth shape, arms and tail... Poor neglected monkey. So B and K rescued it today and added ears, smile, lashes, heart, toque and flair! Will this monkey go home with G or be sent to OSM?! G hasn't seen it yet! FEB 26 update: the monkey was donated on Monday to a student who passed it on to a young lady courageously battling a severe illness. Here's hoping the monkey works his healing magic...

C finally finished her second cat- so cute!!!! This one she will keep for herself and we can see why! C has the cutest real cat, by the way!

H made this incredible "Beetlejuice" snake- her favorite character and movie. And yes- the rattle works!

Note the use of embroidery to sculpt the face and the use of coffee to stain the hair (which is made out of quilt batting)...

KLASS and OSM!!!

15 Feb

KLASS’s Youth-at-Risk-Art-Therapy-Sock-Monkey Club (aka Sock Monkey Monthly) http://klasssockmonkey.wordpress.com/ has been asked by Operation Sock Monkey (OSM) to become its West Coast Operative!  OUR GOAL is to make 100 sock monkeys by the end of March/mid April!  Can we do it?!  WHY NOT?!

Operation Sock Monkey (OSM) http://www.operationsockmonkey.com/

OSM is an initiative in support of Clowns Without Borders South Africa (CWBSA) providing laughter, hope and healing to communities affected by HIV/AIDS.  Handmade Sock Monkeys can be purchased by the public or sponsored* to be sent to children in need of a smile. All proceeds are donated to CWBSA.  KLASS sock monkey makers will be making “oodles of monkeys” to send overseas to help OSM and CWBSA meet the demands!  This is an amazing opportunity for KLASS students to contribute their talents to an incredible cause while experiencing the healing power of sock monkey making.  All supplies and shipping costs for the monkeys are covered through fundraising efforts using OSM notecards, buttons and sponsorships.  STAY TUNED!!!

Sponsor a monkey

* Sponsoring: In exchange for sponsoring a monkey, the sponsor will receive a colourful card that explains the project and what the donation will support.  The sponsor monkeys are made by local crafters in KwaZulu Natal region in South Africa as part of a poverty alleviation program.  All sponsorship proceeds go to directly to the crafters, many of whom have little source of income. Sponsorships act as a double gift, providing a means of income to those living in communities affected by HIV/AIDS and psychosocial support to those bereaved.

Update! The cat-with-no-name has a name!

Monday busy-ness!

8 Feb

The art therapy room is abuzz with projects- especially sock creations!  It’s a good sign that by the end of the day we run out of stuffing too fast and that the room looks like a disaster!  The pins and buttons and pieces of thread and bits of fluff and sock lint is cleaned up, put back in place, discarded, floor vacuumed, brushes cleaned, coffee cups disinfected… Ready for tomorrow!

S made this loving lovely mutt and monkey pair for A...

She included a fluffy heart!

Awaiting delivery!

Toddler size monkey #1 getting stuffed! The process continues... Stay tuned!

B finally finished her monkey (who had been in the project bag unfinished for months)! Monkey is happy now- complete with toque, earring and a... knife. Oh dear- hard core!

Hard-corely cute! :)
